Threads, the latest social media offering from Meta, has hit the scene with a bang. If you hopped on the Threads bandwagon during the initial excitement but have now decided it’s not your cup of tea, fret not! We’ve got you covered on how to bid farewell to this alternative to Twitter and regain control of your online presence.
While Threads is still finding its footing, some early users have concluded that it may not be their ideal platform. If you’re among them and want out, you might be surprised to learn that simply deleting your account is not an option.
Why? Well, creating a Threads profile comes with a twist – you can’t delete it without saying goodbye to your Instagram account too. Meta plays hardball and essentially holds your Instagram account hostage to keep your Threads profile afloat. But if parting ways with Instagram is not in your plans, the next best option is deactivating your Threads profile. Let’s walk you through the process step by step.
But before you proceed, be aware that deactivating your profile will render your posts and interactions invisible until reactivation. Although your posts will remain on Threads’ servers, you can manually delete them one by one if you so choose. Deleting your Instagram account, on the other hand, doesn’t immediately erase your Threads data, as it may linger on Meta’s servers for up to 90 days.
Now, let’s get to it:
- Open the Threads app and tap the profile icon in the bottom right corner.
- Look for the two-line menu icon in the top right of your profile, and tap on it.
- Find and tap the Account icon.
- Click on “Deactivate profile.”
- Then, proceed to “Deactivate Threads profile.”
- Confirm your decision to deactivate when prompted.
Keep in mind that you have the option to change your mind and reactivate your Threads profile later. Just remember, you can only deactivate your profile once per week.
Now you know how to bid adieu to Threads and regain control of your digital journey. Embrace the freedom to explore other platforms or take a break, knowing that you can always come back if you choose to. Happy trails!
