In a thrilling World Cup encounter, South Africa showcased their batting prowess by riding on spectacular centuries from Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, and Aiden Markram, securing a resounding victory over Sri Lanka by a margin of 102 runs.

Sent in to bat, the Proteas batsmen exhibited their masterful skills against the Sri Lankan bowlers. Van der Dussen’s exceptional 108 off 110 balls, combined with Markram’s explosive 106 off 54 and De Kock’s commanding 100 off 84, resulted in a rapid surge of runs, establishing a commanding total.

This score not only propelled South Africa to victory but also marked the highest team total in the history of the World Cup. Dilshan Madushanka managed to take 2 wickets for Sri Lanka amidst the Proteas’ onslaught.

In response, Sri Lanka put up a valiant effort, with Charith Asalanka’s impressive 79 off 65, Kusal Mendis’ quick-fire 76 off 42, and skipper Dasun Shanaka’s determined 68 off 62. However, despite their spirited performance, it was not enough to match South Africa’s dominant total. Gerald Coetzee’s notable bowling performance, securing 3 wickets for 68 runs, played a crucial role in restricting Sri Lanka’s chase.

Temba Bavuma | Proteas skipper: Happy. Wanted to win the game and that’s exactly what we did. It was a clinical performance and give us good confidence going into the next game. It did seamed a bit under lights, but the ball was coming on nicely and you could see how they (the batters) were able to use the pace nicely.

It was all about adjusting to the conditions and we thought it is going to be a bit variable in the second half. If we can take these learnings and we need to adapt whatever is in front of us. Next game I don’t think (the pitch) is going to be too different. Quinton will be fine, didn’t take the field (in the second innings), but I think he will be fine (for the next game).

Dasun Shanaka | Sri Lanka skipper

I expected high scoring game today with the kind of batting line-up South Africa have. We missed our lengths and the execution wasn’t there. We should have kept them to somewhere around 370 and that would have been a bit manageable. We got some batters who were striking it really well, but there was too much to do. Missing those three bowlers (Chameera, Hasaranga and Theekshana) is huge, but that’s the part of the game, we have to move on and it’s an opportunity for others. We need to get our execution right in the next game.

South Africa Shatters Records

This breathtaking achievement not only shattered Australia’s longstanding 2015 record but also etched the Proteas’ name in the annals of cricketing history with an array of unprecedented milestones.

The South African batting juggernaut, displaying remarkable synergy and determination, pulverized the Sri Lankan bowling attack. The sheer magnitude of their score, with every run meticulously earned, showcased the team’s exceptional skills and unwavering focus. As the scoreboard lit up with 428 runs, it signified not only a numerical triumph but also a testament to the team’s resilience and tenacity on the field.

What makes this feat even more extraordinary is that South Africa became the first team ever to achieve three 400-plus totals in the prestigious World Cup tournament. This remarkable consistency underscores the Proteas’ dominance in the limited-overs format, making them a force to be reckoned with in the cricketing arena.

However, the awe-inspiring performance did not stop at the team level. The match witnessed an extraordinary spectacle as three South African batters etched their names in history by scoring centuries in a single World Cup innings. Each century was a testament to the players’ skill, composure under pressure, and unwavering determination to excel on the international stage.

As cricket enthusiasts marveled at this exceptional display, South Africa’s performance not only secured a commanding victory but also left an enduring impression on fans worldwide. The monumental 428/5 became a symbol of the team’s mettle, setting the tone for what promises to be an exhilarating World Cup campaign.
