Dhanteras, the herald of the illustrious Diwali festival, is a day steeped in tradition and auspicious fervor. On this first day of the five-day Diwali celebrations, people across the nation unite in reverence, seeking the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber for prosperity and abundance in their lives. But did you know the story of Dhanvantari?

Dhanvantari: The Divine Healer and Father of Ayurveda

In the rich tapestry of Hindu history, where gods and legends intertwine, there emerges the figure of Dhanvantari, a divine being whose essence resonates through the annals of ancient Indian medicine. Much like Aesculapius of Greek medicine, Dhanvantari is celebrated as the patron God of all branches of medical science, his story echoing through the corridors of time.

According to the Shrimad Bhagvat Purana, in an age when ancient demigods and demons were embroiled in a fierce battle, they sought Lord Vishnu’s intervention. In response, Vishnu advised them to churn the ocean with the Mandar Mountain and the serpent Vasuki. From the depths of the primordial cosmic life substance within the ocean, emerged the great physician Dhanvantari, adorned in a white robe and holding a pot of Amrit, the elixir of immortality.

This significant event, known as Samudramanthana or Sagar Manthana, saw Dhanvantari as one of the 14 Jewels that surfaced. Amrita, the elixir, initially seized by demons, was ultimately reclaimed with the help of Vishnu in the enchanting form of Mohini avatar, leading the demigods to triumph over the demons. This divine episode is commemorated every 12 years during the Kumbha Mela festival.

Moved by human suffering, Dhanvantari chose to descend to earth once more. His rebirth occurred when King Dirghatma of Kashi (Varanasi) performed rigorous austerities to be blessed with a son. Born as the Prince of Kashi, he was known as Kashiraja and Devodasa Dhanvantari. It was he who bestowed the world with Ayurveda, systematically dividing it into eight branches, each representing different specialties in medicine. This profound knowledge became the foundation of the ancient Indian healthcare system, inspiring generations of practitioners.

Sushruta, one of Dhanvantari’s most prominent disciples, played a pivotal role in furthering Ayurveda. He established a school of medicine and surgery in Varanasi, where he trained numerous disciples. Sushruta’s teachings were compiled into the renowned “Sushruta Samhita,” making him the revered father of Indian surgery. Techniques like rhinoplasty and lithotomy, passed down by Dhanvantari, gained global recognition, astounding scholars and practitioners alike.

Dhanvantari’s wisdom was immortalized in the Agnipurana through the teachings of his esteemed disciple, Sushruta. A voluminous glossary of materia medica, known as Dhanvantari Nighantu, also emerged, serving as a testament to his profound impact on the field of medicine.

In the present day, Dhanvantari’s birthday is celebrated annually by Ayurvedic practitioners on Dhanteras, two days before the Diwali festival. Temples dedicated to Dhanvantari can be found in South India, particularly in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, where Ayurvedic medicine is cherished and practiced fervently.

Dhanvantari, the divine healer, bestowed the gift of alleviating human suffering upon the world. His teachings, recorded in ancient texts and revered by practitioners, continue to echo the holistic approach to health and well-being, resonating even in the corridors of modern medicine.
