Early Life and Passion for Cricket
Born on April 24, 1938, in Karachi, undivided India, Mac Mohan, whose real name was Mohan Makhijani, initially harbored dreams of becoming a cricketer. His father, a colonel in the British Army, wanted him to join the military, but Mac’s passion lay on the cricket field. After India’s independence, he moved to Mumbai to pursue his cricketing ambitions, enrolling at Jai Hind College, where his classmate was none other than the legendary actor Sunil Dutt.
The Path to Acting
While playing cricket and participating in college plays, Mac Mohan caught the eye of actress Shaukat Kaifi, who recognized his acting talent and encouraged him to join the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA). Heeding her advice, he trained at the Filmalaya Natya Sansthan and later became an assistant director to the renowned filmmaker Chetan Anand, who gave him his first on-screen opportunity in the 1964 film “Haqeeqat.”
Iconic Villainous Roles
Although Mac Mohan appeared in over 200 films throughout his career, his most iconic role came in the 1975 classic “Sholay,” where his single dialogue as the character Sambha became etched in the minds of audiences across India. Despite his brief screen time, Mac Mohan’s powerful presence and delivery made an indelible impact.
Other notable films in his repertoire include “Zanjeer,” “Shaan,” “Satte Pe Satta,” and “Ajooba,” among many others. He also lent his distinctive voice to various films across multiple Indian languages, showcasing his versatility as an actor.
Personal Life and Legacy
Mac Mohan married Mini, an Ayurvedic doctor, in 1986, and the couple had two daughters, Manjari and Vinita, and a son, Vikrant. His elder daughter, Manjari, followed in his footsteps and is a writer, producer, and director in the film industry.
Known for his good-natured personality and command of the English language, Mac Mohan was also recognized for his dedication to his craft and professionalism on set. Sadly, his battle with lung cancer, a result of his smoking habit, ultimately claimed his life on May 10, 2010, at the age of 72.
