Famous architect BV Doshi dies at age 95; PM Modi expresses his condolences

Balkrishna Doshi, a well-known architect and Padma Bhushan recipient who collaborated with architects like Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 95 in his house in this city. One among those who gave Doshi a heartfelt homage was Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Balkrishna Doshi, a beloved husband, father, grandpa, and great grandfather, passed away on January 24, 2023, according to a statement from his family, which they released.

Many people expressed their condolences for the loss of Doshi, who was largely regarded as the most important architect of modern India.

“Dr. BV Doshi Ji was an outstanding institution builder and a talented architect. By admiring his extensive body of work all over India, future generations will catch glimpses of his grandeur. We are saddened by his departure. Greetings to his loved ones and admirers. Om Shanti,” PM Modi tweeted.

Doshi, who was born in Pune in 1927, collaborated with renowned architects including Le Corbusier. Along with many other well-known projects, he also collaborated with Louis Kahn as a colleague on the construction of the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad.

Doshi was dubbed the Pole Star of architecture by CM Patel.

“We extend our condolences on the demise of Pritzker Prize recipient and ‘Padma Bhushan’ Balakrishna Doshiji, who was regarded as the industry’s pole star. May God provide his family, innumerable fans, and followers the fortitude to endure this shock, he said in a Gujarati tweet.

No one, according to Doshi’s relatives, enjoyed life more. “‘Anand karo,’ as he would say, ‘celebrate life. He had a great number of lovers who reciprocated his affection, according to those who knew him.

One of Doshi’s projects is the Aranya Low Cost Housing township for low- to middle-income families in Indore, which won the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1995.

Other projects by Doshi include the Institute of Indology, CEPT University and Kanoria Centre for Arts in Ahmedabad, the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore, and the Indian Institute of Management.

In 1956, Doshi opened his own business in Ahmedabad under the name Vastushilpa. His family includes a number of architects.

He was the first Indian architect to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2018, which is regarded as one of the most prestigious awards in the area of architecture.

In 2020, he received the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour.

The Royal Institute of British Architects awarded Doshi the “Royal Gold Medal” in 2022 and stated in their statement that his work combined “pioneering modernism with vernacular, informed by a strong awareness of the traditions of India’s architecture, climate, local culture, and workmanship.”
