Alam Ara was released at Majestic Cinema, Mumbai. This was the time when watching movies in cinema halls was not within the reach of everyone in India. But a crowd gathered outside Majestic Cinema to see Alam Ara. The crowd was so large that the police had to come and resort to lathicharge to control the crowd. Alam Ara stayed in Majestic Cinema for full 8 weeks.

Ranbir Kapoor’s great grandfather i.e. Prithviraj Kapoor, who is also called the father of theater in India, also worked in Alam Ara. Before working in this film, Prithviraj Kapoor had worked in nine films. Alam Ara was based on a Parsi play. This play was written by Joseph David. It is said that Alam Ara was greatly inspired by the 1929 American motion film Showboat.

There were a total of 78 actors in Alam Ara. All these actors had recorded their voices for the film for the first time. Even though this film is a milestone in the history of Indian cinema, the sad thing is that not a single copy of this film exists today. The National Archives of India does not have a single print of this film.
